New legislators learning the ropes
Gov. Haley Barbour told a group of newly elected legislators Tuesday night they’ll need to put on their “big-boy britches” for the challenges that lay ahead.
Forty-seven lawmakers, an unusually large class of freshmen, met Tuesday at the Capitol for the first of a two-day orientation organized by the College Board. The sessions are aimed to familiarize the new officials with the legislative process and the hot-button policy issues they’ll address come January.
“The easier we can help them transition into these new positions, the quicker they’ll be able to start dealing with the real issues our state faces,” said Hank Bounds, commissioner of higher education.
