At least the judges will make Mississippi congressional redistricting work
EARLIER THIS year, Mississippi lawmakers spent weeks arguing over how to redraw the state’s legislative districts, to no avail.
They have put far less effort into redrawing the state’s four congressional districts, so it’s highly unlikely that they will come to agreement on those anytime soon. The reason to redraw the districts is to balance them by population according to the newest numbers from the 2010 Census.
The most expedient solution to congressional redistricting was recognized this past week by a panel of three federal judges. They pledged to redraw the four districts if the Legislature doesn’t act by Dec. 4. (This is the outcome favored by the Mississippi Republic Party, including Gov. Haley Barbour and Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann.)
