State Rep. Philip Gunn, a Republican from Clinton, is poised to have the opportunity to set the House agenda for the next four years.
Gunn was selected as the GOP conference’s preferred candidate for House speaker Monday during a nearly two-hour closed meeting of Republican lawmakers at Brandon City Hall.
Gunn’s election means power at the state Capitol likely will be dominated by metro-area residents for the first time in modern history, with both the governor-elect and lieutenant governor-elect hailing from Rankin County.
