Haley Barbour not jumping the gun on nuclear energy

WHEN IT comes to nuclear energy, Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour answers on behalf of his state when he says: “Please in my backyard.”

This was his comment to the Southern States Energy Board Governors Energy Summit last week, when he suggested that Claiborne County would welcome a second nuclear plant to add to its Grand Gulf Nuclear Station.

Nuclear power is certainly a clean source of energy that could create much-needed jobs. But is the governor jumping the gun, considering the nuclear crisis in Japan earlier this year?
No, and here’s why:

Perhaps more than ever before, regulators and industry officials are learning lessons from the Fukushima Dai-ichi incident in March, when a major earthquake and tsunami damaged a nuclear plant and spawned radiation leaks. Above all, they want to prevent something similar from happening in the U.S.
