Mississippi growth improving a little

JACKSON — Mississippi’s economy is not sliding into another recession, but it still feels like one, the state economist told legislators Tuesday.

With its anemic growth, the state’s economy still has not returned to the salad days of 2007 before the Great Recession that officially began in the fall of 2008, Dr. Darrin Webb said.

State unemployment is high, gross domestic product growth is slow and building permits are down by two-thirds from the 2005 pre-Katrina days, Webb said.

“So, it’s natural that it feels like a recession,” he told members of the Joint Legislative Budget Committee.
