GOP treasurer candidates courting conservatives

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Two candidates still seeking the Republican nomination for Mississippi treasurer are touting their conservative credentials as they try to motivate supporters to vote in next Tuesday’s runoff.

Lynn Fitch of Madison and Lee Yancey of Brandon often mention their opposition to abortion — an issue over which the state treasurer has little direct influence, but one that resonates with many in the GOP base.

Fitch is on leave as state Personnel Board director during the campaign and led the balloting in a three-person primary on Aug. 2, followed by Yancey, a one-term state senator.
The winner of the Republican nomination will face Ocean Springs Mayor Connie Moran in the Nov. 8 general election. Moran, 55, was unopposed for the Democratic nomination for treasurer. One faction of the Reform Party also wants to put a candidate in the race.
