Three Rivers landfill approved for $2 million project to convert gas to electricity

Three Rivers Solid Waste landfill, with whom Calhoun County contracts with, has been authorized to construct a 1-megawatt facility that will convert landfill gas to electricity, becoming the second project that uses that process in Mississippi.

The announcement of the $2 million project was made Tuesday at the landfill in Pontotoc County.

Methane gas emitted from the landfill will be used to run a generator to produce electricity. That electricity, enough to power 1,000 homes, will be sold at a premium to the Tennessee Valley Authority. That gas is currently flared and released into the atmosphere.
