Major upset, runoffs mark legislative races
Voter discontent apparently spawned at least one major upset and several runoffs during Tuesday’s state legislative primary races.
One of the biggest surprises occurred in the Senate District 1 contest, incumbent state Sen. Doug Davis of Hernado losing to his Republican challenger Chris Massey, unofficial election returns showed.
With all precincts reporting, Massey led with 52 percent of the vote. Davis chaired the Senate’s powerful Appropriations Committee.
State Senate hopefuls Josh Harkins and Pelahatchie Mayor Knox Ross were among the candidates destined for an Aug. 23 primary runoff.
