Field grows in race for Mississippi House speaker
Democrat Cecil Brown of Jackson is running for speaker of the Mississippi House.
Brown has sent a letter to Democratic incumbents, seeking their support to become the chamber’s presiding officer.
Several representatives are expected to enter the speaker’s race, which will be decided by the 122 House members in January.
Democrat Billy McCoy of Rienzi has been speaker since January 2004, but isn’t seeking re-election to the House.
Among those committed to running for speaker are Republicans Jeff Smith of Columbus and Sidney Bondurant of Grenada and Democrat Bobby Moak of Bogue Chitto.
