The lawyers for Lance Armstrong have accused the government of publicly smearing Armstrong’s reputation during their continuing investigation of him and asked a federal judge to determine who is leaking confidential information to the news media.
Armstrong, the seven-time Tour de France winner who retired this year, has been under federal investigation for more than a year relating to crimes he is suspected of committing during his cycling career. A grand jury has been meeting in Los Angeles to look into the matter, and witnesses have been called to testify, but there has been no indictment.
In a court filing, John W. Keker, Armstrong’s lead lawyer, alleged that the details of the grand jury investigation — including the identities of past and future witnesses, the strategy and direction of the investigation, and the potential charges being considered by the government — were illegally leaked to the news media dozens of times.
