Wicker sees way to end wind vs. water debate
BILOXI — U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker believes his proposed COASTAL Act for adjusting property insurance claims after a hurricane is one way to improve the financially troubled National Flood Insurance Program.
Wicker’s proposal, which he outlined at a meeting Monday with the Sun Herald, would require the secretary of Homeland Security to set ratios for wind and flood damage on properties if homes are completely swept way by hurricanes. The ratios would be used to apportion losses between the National Flood Insurance Program, which covers storm-surge losses, and private insurance companies or state wind pools that cover losses from wind.
