CL Opinion – State revenue takes a hit as casinos close

It’s unfortunate that such heavy losses are being felt during the lingering effects of the Great Recession, with high jobless rates and lower revenue for individuals, businesses and government.

Mississippi lawmakers could consider changes in the gaming law for Mississippi River casinos to help them weather future floods. A law passed during the 2005 regular session allowed river casinos to build on pilings so they wouldn’t have to be in the water – similar to legislation for Coast casinos to come ashore following Hurricane Katrina.

Meantime, the state might consider partnering with casinos for tourism advertising, helping both have their ad dollars go farther.
