Sun-Herald profiles J.P. Compretta

BAY ST. LOUIS — J.P. Compretta has had a storied career in the state House and as speaker pro tem. He’s one of the most powerful politicians in the state.

But to watch, talk to, or ask others about Compretta, D-Bay St. Louis, you might not realize this. Compretta, who is not seeking re-election after 32 years in the House, is known as a low-key, laid-back, gentleman lawmaker. And, as several of his fellow state leaders — Democrat and Republican — noted, it’s hard to find somebody to say anything bad about Compretta.

“J.P. Compretta is a true statesman,” said House Speaker Billy McCoy. “He is respected by all the membership of the House and he’s been a mighty voice for the Coast for a third of a century, and the state of Mississippi is going to miss J.P. Compretta as a leader.”
