Compretta stepping down opens possibilities
JACKSON — The decision of House Speaker Pro Tem J.P. Compretta, D-Bay St. Louis, not to seek re-election this year could have huge ramifications in the speaker’s race.
A candidate for speaker could build additional support by aligning with a House member seeking to be speaker pro tem, which is a post that can wield considerable power in the Legislature.
With Speaker Billy McCoy, D-Rienzi, yet to announce whether he will seek re-election or step down, their is speculation about how the battle to preside over the House for the next four-year term plays out.
At any rate, Compretta has served as a quiet, but steadying voice in the Mississippi Legislature. He suffered great personal tragedy in recent years, and though obviously hurting, continued to be a well respected voice in the House.
