Who Hasn’t Qualified In The House
With a little less than a month until the June 1 qualifying deadline, we still have a few House races where we are waiting on incumbents to make their decision on whether or not they will be a candidate for re-election. As it turns out, all Republicans have either qualified or announced they will not be running for re-election. We are waiting to hear from the following Democrats: Billy McCoy (HD 3), Willie Bailey (HD 49), George Flaggs (HD 55), Mary Coleman (HD 65), James Evans (HD 70), Johnny Stringer (HD 87), Diane Peranich (HD 121), and J.P. Compretta (HD 122).
The big name on there is obviously McCoy. A decision should be coming soon. I don’t know if there is any good reason to believe he is leaning one way or the other. If the courts do simply impose the House map that cleared that chamber, it may brighten McCoy’s prospects of another term as Speaker. But we shall see. Jeff Smith is running for Speaker as an independent so he is obviously running for re-election. I am not positive if he intends to run as a Democrat or indy, but he has no competition at this point.
Majority in Miss.
