Bryant: Deal reached on Miss. budget

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant said late Wednesday night that House and Senate negotiators had reached a tentative deal on a $5.5 billion budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

Earlier, Gov. Haley Barbour had called on lawmakers to complete work on the budget before the regular session of the Legislature ends.

“While no budget is perfect and considering these tough economic times facing our state, Senate budget negotiators Doug Davis and Videt Carmichael have tentatively agreed upon a $5.498 billion state budget,” Bryant’s statement said. “This budget level funds the Mississippi Adequate Education Program and leaves $206 million in reserves. We have a lot to accomplish in a short period of time, but I have full faith in our staff that we can make this work,” Bryant said.
