Barbour cuts trip amid criticism

A spending plan could be finalized, Stringer and Brown said, if the governor was available or would stay out of it. Barbour has called on the House to cut $77 million from its $5.5 billion spending plan because, he said, it relies too heavily on pots of money that may not be available next year to fund reoccurring expenses.

“If Mississippi families planned their budgets like the House has done for the state, they would soon be bankrupt,” Barbour said.

Stringer said House leaders responded to Barbour’s call with a proposal to trim $37 million, though they point out Barbour has signed past budgets that include one-time money.
