Redistricting: Two elections a waste

The most complex, controversial and consuming issue at the Legislature is lost on most average Mississippians.

It is not that voters are uninformed or don’t care; it is that the partisan political battles over redistricting the Legislature have degenerated into a morass of politics and personalities that has little to do with the constitutional obligation to reapportion districts.

It is an internal battle with potential candidates, political parties and special interests vying to get an edge in the upcoming elections. It is about counting votes when the Mississippi House elects a speaker next year and the political ambitions of a lieutenant governor seeking the governorship. And it is about the 174 members of the Legislature looking out for their own political futures based on what their districts might look like.
