Miss. Lawmakers Consider Teacher Code Of Ethics

JACKSON, Miss. — Mississippi lawmakers are debating a bill that would hold teachers accountable in the classroom.

Supporters of the bill said it’s necessary to keep students safe.

WAPT News has reported several stories over the past few years of teachers who had inappropriate relationships with their students and have faced criminal charges. The state Department of Education said even more of these cases happen, but teachers don’t face charges because parents of students don’t want to involve their children in the legal process. State Superintendent of
Education Dr. Tom Burnham said the state Department of Education has come up with a way to hold those teachers accountable.
