Miss. House panel OKs bill for civil rights museum

Lawmakers are fast-tracking a proposal to build a civil rights museum and a Mississippi history museum on state-owned property in downtown Jackson.

The bill passed 104-16 in the House on Wednesday, hours after clearing the House Ways and Means Committee. It would authorize $55 million in bonds for both museums and a parking lot. The museums would be adjacent to each other, a few blocks from the Capitol.

Lawmakers have been discussing the museums for years, but the effort regained momentum in January after Republican Gov. Haley Barbour said a civil rights museum in Jackson should become a reality.
