Hernando’s Davis assumes leadership of powerful Senate committee
Mississippi Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant on Tuesday named state Sen. Doug Davis, R-Hernando, as chairman of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee, a position that will increase DeSoto County’s influence in the state Legislature.
Davis, who had been serving as committee vice chairman, succeeds former chairman Alan Nunnelee, R-Tupelo, who is headed to Congress after defeating Democratic U.S. Rep. Travis Childers on Nov. 2.
Bryant made the announcement during a ceremony in the DeSoto County Courthouse Chancery courtroom in Hernando.
As Appropriations Committee vice chairman, Davis and Nunnelee had worked with House budget-writers in drafting annual spending proposals for legislators to consider.
