Late season is bonus season for college football coaches

One big winner is Chris Petersen of No. 4 Boise State. On Saturday, his team got its eighth win, triggering a one-year contract extension through 2015 at a $1.49 million salary that year.
But he’s far from the only coach to cash in so far — and there is more at stake for him and others who keep winning, reaching conference title and bowl games or meeting academic, administrative or attendance benchmarks.

Central Florida’s George O’Leary earned $50,000 two weeks ago for his team’s sixth victory, then added $50,000 more last week for its seventh. Those wins helped lift UCF into the top 25 of this week’s USA TODAY Coaches and Associated Press media polls; that two-part achievement, a first for the school, was worth another $50,000.
