Palazzo makes history, now he must make his mark
Congressman-elect Steven Palazzo’s stunning defeat of Gene Taylor has assured him a place in the annals of Mississippi politics. We’ve yet to find a precedent in this state for a Republican challenger knocking off such a tenured Democratic officeholder.
At the end of an extremely aggressive campaign for the office, Palazzo was gracious in claiming victory, and we join him in applauding the 21 years of service Taylor has provided South Mississippians in Congress.
Now Palazzo must assure his constituents that he can put together a staff — both in his offices around the 4th Congressional District and in Washington — that will serve their interests and meet their needs. Constituent services are a core function of any member of Congress, whether resolving a problem with the VA or the Social Security Administration for individuals or securing funding for local governments or contracts for local employers.
