Notre Dame AD should have been more fatherly than lawyerly

As uncertainty reigns on the Notre Dame campus following last week’s death of a student videographer filming in high winds above the football practice field, one thing is clear:
Irish athletics director Jack Swarbrick said Wednesday in a phone interview with USA TODAY that he is not resigning, nor will he ask for the resignation of football coach Brian Kelly.

Speaking publicly for the first time in nearly a week about the tragic death of 20-year-old Declan Sullivan, Swarbrick said “it was nausea, a sickness in the pit of my stomach” to see what he saw when he rushed to the scene of the collapsed lift carrying Sullivan.
“The fact that Declan died in this tragic accident means we didn’t do all we can,” Swarbrick said. “There’s no attempt or no interest in moving away from the fact that we should have, we must have, been able to do something to protect Declan. We’ll think about that the rest of our lives.”
