Notre Dame’s Kelly losing fans’ faith
Coach inherited a bad situation, and now it is perceived to be worse
Kelly needs all the allies he can find. It took only nine weekends of one season for Notre Dame’s head coach to arrive at a crisis, a startling spiral that seemed impossible a month ago but one that threatens to destabilize his tenure before it even really got started.
Kelly lost the benefit of the doubt against Navy. Then videographer Declan Sullivan lost his life on Kelly’s watch. Then Kelly lost quarterback Dayne Crist for the next six months to a torn patellar tendon that was surgically repaired Sunday. Then he lost a bedrock recruit, top 100 defensive end Aaron Lynch, who reneged on his oral commitment Sunday.
