The Bulldogs missed 11 tackles, including four on just one play, and costly penalties set Alabama-Birmingham up for at least one touchdown in MSU’s 29-24 win on Saturday.
“We haven’t had plays that looked like that all year,” MSU defensive coordinator Manny Diaz said. “It was just something that hadn’t been us.”
Diaz just hopes to get things corrected for No. 23 Mississippi State (6-2, 2-2 Southeastern Conference) in time for Saturday, when it hosts Kentucky (4-4, 1-4) at 6 p.m. on ESPNU.
The challenge is a hefty one, Bulldogs coach Dan Mullen said. The Wildcats’ offense is one of the most explosive in the conference in his eyes.
“They can score in a hurry,” Mullen cautioned. “With all their great athletes they can put points on the board, so they’re never really out of the game.”
