MORE MEDIOCRITY IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Who is the best team in college football? In past years that question was very easy to determine. In 2010, you have a better chance of determining what Lou Holtz is actually saying. Many media outlets refer to this phenomenon as “parity” in college football. Parity is a term is thrown around more than a football at Texas Tech. (I wish that Mike Leach would have locked the term up too….too soon? Okay, Sorry Craig James). Webster’s Dictionary tells me that parity means the quality or state of being equal. To an extent, that is true. But, I don’t think that teams being equal means being equally good.
Mediocrity would be a better term to use. College football teams just don’t seem as crisp as they used to. Ten years ago, everybody knew that it was going to almost be impossible to defeat Florida State or Miami. Those superpowers don’t exist anymore. Stanford can beat USC. South Carolina can beat Alabama. I won’t even mention Appalachian State at this juncture.
