Barbour: Exactly what did Guv miss?

Several state legislators seized on an Associated Press story documenting the fact that Republican Gov. Haley Barbour’s been traveling out of state for all or part of 193 days the last 15 months as evidence that Barbour’s been gone too much.

Democratic House Education Committee chairman Rep. Cecil Brown of Jackson told the AP: “It’s like trying to deal with ‘Where’s Waldo?’ You just don’t know where he is or how to get in touch with him.”

Brown has expressed concern over difficulty scheduling meetings with Barbour at a time of budget troubles. That concern begs the question: Exactly what duty, what responsibility, has Barbour missed?

Economic development? No. Over the last 15 months, Barbour has overseen successful economic development negotiations with the KiOR biofuels enterprise, the Hamilton Beach distribution center, Soladigm, Twin Creeks Technologies, Schulz Xtruded Products and other companies in addition to his role in keeping the massive Toyota project on track in northeast Mississippi.
