Barbour fills DA positions

GOV. BARBOUR FILLS DISTRICT ATTORNEY POSITIONS

JACKSON – Gov. Haley Barbour announced today he has appointed new district attorneys to fill unexpired terms in the 12th and 13th Circuit Court Districts.

The Governor appointed Patricia Burchell of Hattiesburg as District Attorney in the 12th Circuit Court District, succeeding current District Attorney Jon Mark Weathers, whose resignation goes into effect Oct. 1. Burchell, who served as an Assistant District Attorney under Weathers for the last 7 years, will serve the remainder of his unexpired term.

Burchell holds a Juris Doctorate from the University of Mississippi School of Law, a Master of Education degree and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the University of Southern Mississippi.

Weathers has served as District Attorney since 2003. The 12th Circuit Court District includes Forrest and Perry counties.

In the 13th Circuit Court District, Gov. Barbour appointed Daniel Jones of Mendenhall to fill the remainder of the term vacated by the resignation of Eddie Bowen. Bowen left the office to take a judicial appointment in the 13th Circuit Court.

Jones holds a Juris Doctorate from the University of Mississippi School of Law, a Master of Arts degree in political science and a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from the University of Southern Mississippi. His appointment will be effective Oct. 1, 2010.

The 13th Circuit Court District includes Covington, Jasper, Simpson and Smith counties.

The election for full terms as District Attorney in both districts will be held Nov. 8, 2011.
