Travis Childers meets with Clarion-Ledger – Says he’ll hold off Nunnelee in MS-01
Though political observers say the race is too close to call or leaning Republican, U.S. Rep. Travis Childers believes he will hold off his GOP challenger in November’s elections.
Republican backers seeking a GOP majority in Congress have targeted the Northern Mississippi 1st District seat as one they can win in a mid-term election year with voters frustrated about the bad economy and in an anti-incumbent mood.
Childers, 52, doesn’t think they can.
In a wide-ranging interview with The Clarion-Ledger’s editorial board last week, he repeatedly blasted his Republican opponent, state Sen. Alan Nunnelee of Tupelo, saying voters will see through Nunnelee’s lack of support on issues important to Mississippi.
Childers, D-Booneville, said Nunnelee has erroneously distorted his record in Congress and has offered few specifics of his own in the Legislature. Nunnelee chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee, which has wrestled with state budget issues in the past year. Childers challenged the Tupelo lawmaker’s support of public education and said the longtime legislator has chosen to attack him rather than tout his own accomplishments.
