Causing headaches and making life miserable for opposing offenses was a hit-and-miss proposition for the LSU defense last season.
Sure, the Tigers were considerably better than the season before and limited foes to 16.2 points a game, third in the Southeastern Conference behind two of the country’s top defensive teams, Alabama and Florida.
But the bend-but-don’t break principle tended to be a little nerve-wracking for LSU fans.
Six times in 13 games, opponents produced 340 or more yards against the Tigers. Three times LSU got stretched out for 425 yards or more.
While foes didn’t always score a ton of points (seven scored 16 points or less), moving the ball wasn’t nearly a big enough issue.
The Tigers were middle-of-the-pack in the SEC in total yards allowed (327.6 a game), 11th in first downs allowed (252), eighth in pass defense (194.2 yards a contest) and eighth in third-down defense (opponents converted at a 36.8 percent rate).
