Study Looks at Cost of Early Back-to-School

One research study published earlier this year suggests that starting school a little later could save Mississippi millions of dollars.

Beth Stevens is a mother of four children in Rankin County. After getting an expensive electric bill, she started doing research about what it costs schools to go back in early-to-middle August.

“And I started thinking, what must it cost for the school system to try to keep the kids cool for the month of August?” said Stevens.

She found that other states support a mandate for schools to start no earlier than the middle of August or even after Labor Day, all to save utility costs.
