Emails suggest mutual interest between Big Ten, Texas
“I did speak with Bill Powers at Texas, who would welcome a call to say they have a ‘Tech’ problem,” Gee told Delany in one of many emails obtained by the Dispatch after a public-records request for documents and correspondence related to Big Ten expansion.
Ohio State declined to clarify what Gee meant by “Tech problem,” telling the Dispatch that the records request did not require the school to elaborate on the email.
Gee was almost certainly referring to Texas Tech, one of three publicly funded Texas schools in the Big 12. The other two are Texas and Texas A&M, both of which are members of the Association of American Universities (AAU). Membership in the AAU, an alliance of prestigious research schools, is a key criterion for the Big Ten as it looks at expansion candidates.
