New provision gives Mississippi State’s cowbell new life

“There’s some question as to whether or not this will be successful, but I think we don’t have anything to lose at this point,” Mississippi State athletic director Scott Stricklin said. “What we’ve been doing has not been working. We can go to our fan base and say: ‘Hey, for the first time in 36 years, the league and its members recognize that this is an important tradition, an important symbol to our institution, and they’re willing to make an accommodation.'”

Auburn played a significant role.

Athletic director Jay Jacobs helped Stricklin lobby other schools to support the provision. In fact, Auburn sponsored the legislation and Jacobs spoke out in meetings for fellow athletic directors to consider the importance of their own traditions back home.
