Commercial Appeal – Nunnelee’s victory slim in Desoto

DeSoto County voters followed the districtwide trend in Tuesday’s Republican congressional primary elections by giving 1st District winner Alan Nunnelee the majority of the county’s votes.

Nunnelee, who captured 52 percent of the vote districtwide, will go on to face Rep. Travis Childers, D-Miss., and seven Independent and third-party candidates in the Nov. 2 general election.

“This is not an election about one man,” Nunnelee said after his victory Tuesday night. “This is about taking our country back, taking it back from the liberal left wing that controls the United States Congress.”

Childers, a self-described fiscal conservative, voted with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on federal stimulus spending but voted against her on a federal health care overhaul.
