GOP congressional contenders hit homestretch
The three Republican contenders hoping to challenge U.S. Rep. Travis Childers in November are putting the best face on their congressional campaigns as they head into a busy final week of politicking throughout DeSoto County and rest of North Mississippi.
Morgan Baldwin, general consultant for the Nunnelee campaign, said Monday that Nunnelee is taking nothing for granted in the final days before the election.
“You run unopposed or you run scared, and we’re not unopposed,” Baldwin said. “We’re continuing to concentrate on a conservative message as we crisscross the district.”
But the campaign of opponent Henry Ross, former mayor of Eupora, says there’s a sense that momentum is building for Ross, and they’re optimistic.
“It’s a horse race,” said Jeppie Barbour, brother of Gov. Haley Barbour and the Ross campaign’s field director. “I think we’ll be awhile Tuesday night, seeing how it turns out.”
Hunter Lipscomb, Ross’s campaign manager, doesn’t point to any polling data but says simply the campaign “has been given reason to believe” it will be a close race.
