USA TODAY – Spill could hurt Gulf wildlife for decades
How is the Gulf oil spill affecting wildlife? Since the spill is a mile below the surface, scientists are struggling to assess the impact.
“Just because it is out of sight doesn’t mean there is no impact,” Dr. Doug Inkley, a senior scientist for the National Wildlife Federation, says in an interview. “The whole thing is like a slow moving train wreck.”
Inkley says the Exxon Valdez spill occured in 1989, but the herring population has still not recovered. “When the wrecking train comes to a stop that is only the end to the beginning,” he says. “The Gulf oil spill’s effects will go on for years, if not decades.”
