Taylor urges Navy to take lead
The U.S. Navy should assume the lead role in the disaster response to the Deepwater Horizon oil leak, U.S. Rep. Gene Taylor has urged.
In a letter to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, the Mississippi Democrat says, in part: “The taxpayers have invested a tremendous amount of resources and capabilities within the Department of Defense. We need to ensure that every asset available to our government is ready to address this crisis threatening the Gulf Coast.
“Federal authorities have given BP two weeks to handle the situation. Their efforts thus far have not been successful in controlling the source of the leak and their best estimate to fully contain the leak is approximately 30 additional days.”
