In the latest signal that the 49ers will try to ease Frank Gore’s workload, the team used one of its three sixth-round picks Saturday on Mississippi State running back Anthony Dixon.
Dixon, a big back (233 pounds), is more thunder than lightning. Dixon had a pre-draft 40 time of only 4.72 seconds — making him a tortoise by NFL standards.
But at Mississippi State, he set school records for career yards (3,994) and rushing touchdowns (42) and impressed the 49ers with his physical style.
