Tea party vs. ‘Obamunism’

GULFPORT — South Mississippians gathered at the Sportsplex to vent about what they believe is an out-of-control federal government.

Thursday was the deadline to file income taxes. Nationwide, conservative groups held tea parties. Tea stands for “Taxed Enough Already.”

Some in the Sportsplex crowd of about 400 protested President Barack Obama’s policies with signs bearing words such as “Obamunism.”

The crowd also heard from Republican congressional candidates Joe Tegerdine and Steven Palazzo, who will square off in the GOP primary June 1 for a chance to challenge incumbent Democrat Gene Taylor.

Taylor, who has easily won races in most years since his 1989 election, was invited, too, but couldn’t attend because he had to be in Washington, organizers said.

Tegerdine said he was told by some Republican Party officials it would be very difficult to defeat Taylor, but that didn’t bother him.

Palazzo, a military veteran, said he was a fighter, which he said is needed in Washington.
