Actual advances in civil rights in Mississippi
Despite a week of wasting a lot of time and energy arguing over “gotcha’ politics and symbolic proclamations about Confederate History Month, an actual advance in civil rights in Mississippi came in U.S. District Judge Tom S. Lee’s ruling ordering Walthall County to stop a public school transfer policy that was nothing more than a wink-and-nudge resegregation of the county’s public school system. Not as politically sexy as proclamations, but far more effective.
That’s the maddening thing about the difference in reality and perception on civil rights issues in Mississippi in 2010. By and large, the right thing is being done either voluntarily or as a result of the rule of law.
