Health care: Barbour off base on suit

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour is joining the national Republican efforts to throw up roadblocks to national health care reform.

Barbour has called on Attorney General Jim Hood to file a lawsuit to challenge the constitutionality of requiring Americans to buy health insurance.

Barbour is a key figure in the national Republican Party and an architect of much of its national strategy, so such political activities can be expected. However, Barbour should separate his political activities from his duties as governor of Mississippi and not launch the state into such a wasteful lawsuit.

Barbour has criticized the health care bill as being harmful to the economy and putting unfunded mandates on the state. He opposes requiring those who can afford health insurance to buy it.
