For Colt McCoy, no need to fret draft round
FORT WORTH – Given the magic of hindsight, the names Spergon Wynn, Steve Fuller, Gary Huff and Gary Keithley have earned their place in NFL lore.
But context is needed to know why they should serve as a reality check for former Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, the 2009 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award winner, as he prepares to begin his NFL career.
The Forgettable Foursome above were quarterbacks taken in the NFL draft ahead of a Hall of Famer or a future one.
Wynn preceded Tom Brady, winner of three Super Bowls with the New England Patriots, by 16 picks during the sixth round in 2000. Fuller was a first-round pick in 1979, two rounds before the San Francisco 49ers selected Joe Montana.
Both Garys were called in 1973 ahead of Dan Fouts, who joined McCoy at Monday night’s O’Brien dinner at the Fort Worth Club to collect the 2009 Davey O’Brien Legends Award. Fouts and Montana are Hall of Famers. Brady needs only to retire to start his countdown to Canton.
