Bulls Hit One Out of Park With Holtz
Early Thursday afternoon my cell phone started buzzing away with a text from an old friend, a USF fan.
“Just broke that Holtz accepted,” it read, as more messages flowed in afterward.
I usually don’t get texts or calls from this friend during workdays because of his busy schedule, but the reason for him opting to put his job on hold was clear.
Come to find out, he was basically jumping for joy about Skip Holtz becoming South Florida’s new football coach, and I don’t blame him.
The Bulls hit one out of the park with this hiring for a number of reasons.
First, the school needed to quickly march people past the media circus surrounding recently fired Jim Leavitt.
I’m not even going to touch on the reason for the change and just say that the program’s only coach for its first 13 seasons did a nice job of building it to respectability.
Under Leavitt, USF showed flashes of greatness in each of the past few seasons, but turned out to be a dud by the end.
If I had a dollar for every time I heard a fan or sportswriter say, “Here we go again,” when the Bulls started to sputter, I’d be a rich man.
