This is how coaching searches play out in the age of the Internet.
Earlier today, David Cutcliffe was allegedly a done deal to Tennessee. Then Air Force coach Troy Calhoun and Cutcliffe were both top candidates to coach the Volunteers.
Then this afternoon Calhoun put out a release announcing his plans to stay at Air Force. Meanwhile, a Knoxville TV station, WATE, reported that Cutcliffe was scheduled to talk to Tennessee AD Mike Hamilton.
So the Knoxville News-Sentinel reported that Cutcliffe to Tennesee was going to happen, barring any snags.
Back in Durham, the student newspaper, The Chronicle, tracked down four players who said a team meeting, usually a sure sign of a coach’s imminent departure, had not been called.
Then the Tennessee site on the Scout network, Rocky Top News, reported that the Volunteers’ next coach would come from a group of four candidates – Louisiana Tech coach Derek Dooley, Connecticut coach Randy Edsall, Houston coach Kevin Sumlin and Utah coach Kyle Whittingham.
Notice that Cutcliffe’s name is not on that list.
