Sugar Bowl Q & A with the Cincinnati Bearcat Examiner
With the Allstate Sugar Bowl featuring the Florida Gators and Cincinnati Bearcats only a day away, I contacted Joshua Burns, the Cincy Examiner, to get his take on the game. Josh is a lifelong Bearcat fan and has covered UC for Examiner.com all season. I asked him five questions to which he provided insightful answers for and are published below. Q: Now that Brian Kelly has left for Notre Dame, how does that affect the game plan for Cincinnati? Did Kelly handle play-calling duties throughout the season? How have the players handled the situation, and do you think it has affected their preparation?
A: There is no doubt that Brian Kelly, in his three short years in Cincinnati, became known as the best coach Cincinnati football has ever known. With Kelly leaving for Notre Dame, Offensive Coordinator Jeff Quinn has taken over head coaching duties for the Sugar Bowl. (Quinn is now officially the head coach for the University of Buffalo as Cent. Michigan coach Butch Jones was hired by the Bearcats to replace Kelly. Quinn will maintain head coaching duties through New Year’s, however.) Quinn has been Kelly’s O-Coordinator for 21 years, so if anyone knows how to execute Brian Kelly’s design at UC, its Quinn. Throughout this season, Kelly did call plays during games, but Quinn and Kelly both drew up game plans in preparation for each game. There should be no change in the Bearcats’ fast-paced, high-powered offense due to Kelly’s departure.
