Side deals short Miss. on health care
It looks as though President Obama is going to get his Christmas wish of passage of legislation to overhaul the nation’s health care system during his first year in office.
It’s not quite a done deal yet, and it’s not exactly in the shape anyone wants. It doesn’t go far enough for most liberals and it goes way too far for all conservatives.
But after a series of compromises and tradeoffs, Senate Democrats after midnight Sunday won a crucial test vote to shut down a threatened Republican filibuster on the Senate bill. The vote was 60 to 40 with all 58 Democrats and the Senate’s two independents voting against all 40 Senate Republicans. The vote came in time to allow final consideration by Christmas Eve.
The House has already passed a bill, so now it is up to lawmakers to agree on changes in both measures that will allow final passage.
