Fuelman: Accountability is missing

So, why are Jackson Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. and Ward 1 Councilman Jeff Weill at odds over something so simple as how city employees are using – or misusing – gasoline cards.

Johnson and Weill clashed Monday when the councilman asked for documents on monthly gasoline purchases using the Fuelman gas discount cards.

Johnson refused to turn over the records, resulting in a verbal confrontation with the mayor accusing Weill of trying to micromanage the city and interfere in the mayor’s duties.

Weill and Johnson have often clashed over the council’s role in budget matters and this appears to be an ongoing personal issue between the two. But lost in this schoolyard bickering over whose toys are whose is the basic accountability involving Fuelman purchases.
