Kelly, Harbaugh reportedly will interview with Irish
Notre Dame will interview Brian Kelly for its football coaching vacancy Tuesday in New York City, ESPN.com reports. The school will also speak to Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh, the New York Times reports.
The Cincinnati coach had said he would “entertain” a request to speak with the Irish after the Pittsburgh game, though he declined to discuss the job Saturday following the Bearcats’ 45-44 win over the Panthers.
Two Cincinnati players say Kelly told them last week he would remain at the school, according to the Web site. “He said, ‘It’s not an issue; I’m not going there,'” safety Aaron Webster told ESPN about Kelly. “He said, ‘I love Cincinnati, and I’m staying here.'”
However, Kelly said the following on his Twitter account Monday: “Just informed our team that Notre Dame has contacted me and I will listen to what they have to say.”
Notre Dame fired Charlie Weis last week after five seasons in which he compiled a 35-27 record. Kelly is 33-6 in three full seasons at Cincinnati. He led the Bearcats to a 12-0 record and a Sugar Bowl berth this year after taking them to the Orange Bowl last season.
Speaking to ESPN Radio’s Dan Patrick on Monday, Kelly said he would make a decision about his future by next Saturday. “The fact of the matter is, I haven’t made the decision yet as to what is in our best interest — my family’s best interest — and I’ll do that over the next few days,” he said.
