Edwards crunches numbers for ESPN
Jackson native has become leading expert on BCS projections
Just last month, Brad Edwards found himself in the office of Texas coach Mack Brown. An interview completed, the national championship coach and ESPN’s Edwards spent the next 20 minutes talking about Edwards’ exhaustive analysis of the Bowl Championship Series.
For Edwards, a 38-year-old Jackson native and 1989 Jackson Academy graduate, it was humbling.
“It’s flattering enough to hear some nationally recognized media call me and ask me for my opinions on BCS matters, but that probably took the cake when Mack told me that he actually pays attention to what I’ve said,” Edwards said.
Edwards, the son of a computer programmer, is in high demand these days for his analysis of the BCS – an oft-changing, ever-confusing formula that determines who plays for college football’s national title. This year’s final numbers will be unveiled on Sunday.
For more than a decade, Edwards has been ESPN’s go-to voice on projecting what will happen and what’s at stake. His name has been in front of millions of viewers, his voice heard by millions of listeners, his words parsed by millions of readers on ESPN.com.
His parents still live in the metro area; his voice is still readily available as a regular guest of local radio personality Bo Bounds.
